Characters story: Tien was brought up in a very cold, brutal manner. He has taken to this same type of upbringing because it was the only way he has known. He was not friendly, but he is not outwardly evil either, only thinking about fighting.

Tien is nothing more than a mere fighter, looking for his best challenge, be it against someone good or someone of pure evil. He has no stake into how a planet is being ruled, if someone has been done an injustice, if he himself is not affected by it. He has been easily manipulated by those who have power over him, is easily impressionable and can be used in many different ways. Some could say he has a very assassin way about him.

However, all that changed when he met a young Goku and his master, Master Roshi. He was brought up in the same way that Krillin, Goku and Yamcha were brought up by Roshi. He isn't exactly like them, as he is still socially a little bit of a lone wolf, but he does fight evil whenever he can. He still loves the fight, but if someone was threatening his home, he would try to stop them.
